 Youth Worker Professional Development Workshops

Youth workers have a vital and often overlooked role in our culture. They choose, often voluntarily, to work with young people who are in a crucial developmental stage as they transition to adulthood. Today in New Zealand/Aotearoa, with youth facing many challenging issues, they need the support of significant others who understand their growth experience. This requires youth workers to have well-developed awareness and skills to know how to respond effectively.

The following one or two-day training courses support this development:

  • Teambuilding Tricks for Youth Workers - An interactive experiential workshop of icebreakers, warm-ups, energisers and reflection tools, designed for youth workers seeking to strengthen group relationships and build a positive group atmosphere.
  • Developing Socially and Emotionally Intelligent Youth - Awareness and skills enabling youth workers to relate to youth authentically, acknowledging the importance of their own feelings and those of youth; for motivating ourselves; and having the capacity to manage emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships.
  • Peer Mentoring Skills - Practical skills for youth workers to support each other and youth in being more self-aware and self-supporting, with strategies for handling everyday issues.
  • Creating a Positive Learning Environment - Essential elements of preparation, delivery and presentation to stimulate communication and interest among participants in youth events and  group work.
  • The Gift of Conflict - Conflict resolution skills for managing difficult relationships, including skills for effectively assisting individuals in conflict with others to resolve their differences.
  • Interpersonal Communication Skills - Interpersonal skills that uphold self-worth and build better relationships with and among the youth they support.
  • The Balancing Act – Strategies for youth workers to reduce stress and maintaining a healthy balance between their personal and ‘professional’ work with youth.
  • Group Work Skills - Awareness, skills and facilitation processes for youth workers who work with groups and want to know how to develop group cohesiveness, build positive  interpersonal relationships and cultivate self-worth in youth.

Director and trainer, Dharan Longley, encourages authentic interaction, self-trust, and self-empowerment through experiential involvement and modelling practical, transferable processes.
Workshops can be one or two-days in length, according to location, available time and budget.
